Kimmie - From what I have seen with birds at my store, and Elmo (my cag) if they are socialized and have more than one person that plays, holds, feeds, ect..ect..ect... they might not have the "one" person they want to be with and thats it. There are people I have met that have greys that will bite or refuse to be around other people, but most of the time this is because there was not a lot of interactions with other people while the bird was young. If you and the hubby spend time with him then he may still have the "fav" but will still enjoy others company.

hey ronda,

I was told by the breeder i got my bird from that when they are young, or even when you first get them that they like to test you and see what they can get away with. Being only 10 months is still young, and im sure she is just testing the waters. I also agree with bmustee. Mine is a cag and im just hoping that my bird dont choose him over me lol, but only time will tell cause he is only 4 months. we both spend time with him. i guess we all just need to wait and see.

Re: What would you say is this normal?

Ok, I tested this yesterday lol. I had my daughter walk up to the cage and get Sweetheart and take her over to the couch. While sweetheart was trying to get to the edge to jump off to me she was able to pet her. I told Jessica to see if she could give her neck scratches, she was able to, but sweetheart was still determined to get to me while in the process. She wouldn't even hold still to enjoy them. I came over and sat on the couch and she ran all the way across the couch and over to my lap and than climbed up to my shoulder. I think it's cause my daughter has smaller hands. Cause I noticed she won't hold still while she's doing it, petting, scratches etc. And than if she is trying for too long which in our world isn't even a minute, she is nipping at Jessica. I think she just isn't as intimidated with her smaller hands like she is ours? After I saw what she did yesterday though with Jessica I'm not to worried about it lol. She was pretty nippy with her and wouldn't even hold still, even when I wasn't next to her. Thanks all for helping me try to figure her out lol

I have read that greys will have a favorite person for different things. Sweetheart might have you as the all around fav, but it sounds like when she wants a good petting she goes to Jessica.

I honestly don't know. She has tried one other time besides this and SweetHeart was nipping at her, so I would just have to have her try it again I guess. But that's what I thought was weird cause she will still pick me if we are all on the floor. So obviously she hasn't picked my daughter at least as of yet. And from everything I have read and this is many many sites before I chose wither to get a TAG or CAG, I had read over and over again that the TAG's are more laid back and more social. Which I do think is true, because my brother who has only been over here once since we have had her can walk up to the cage and get her. And he is the biggest 6'4 baby I have ever seen lol. He is afraid of everything as far as animals really go. He just admires all of mine and doesn't have any for himself lol.

Wow - that is really odd isnt it? Was this just a once off? Or can Jessica still pet and cuddle her? Sometimes Liath will let my daughter pet her, but not always. But when she does let her, she is quite comfortable with her. I don't get it myself, and my daughter just keeps trying!

I'm not soo sure about that, for one TAG's aren't known to be a one person bird, their cousin the CAG is mostly known for this. And if you place all three of us on the floor SweetHeart comes to me, she actually runs to me lol. She is nippy with Jessie and Jessica. But as far as the petting goes she seems to take it better from Jessica. Now I do know too that not all Grey's are cuddly, actually most aren't. But I just thought that maybe because of her size SweetHeart was like this. I think if she were bonded to my daughter ,which has never shown interest in her until yesterday (daughter), that she would go to her if she had an option over me. Whenever SweetHeart is on anyone else but me, she seems to lean over to try to get to me. I don't know, just thought I would say a little more, cause I really don't think in one day and one sitting that she could have bonded to her instantly and like I said she will still come to me first if given the choice.

Hello Ronda,

Well first of all the bird has bonded with your daughter. It has a trust for her and that will not probablly change. Grets are known as a one person bird and this is a classic example of that. Sweetheart has a bond with her and she will be the most confy with her. You and Jessie might be aloud to hold the bird and do certain things but your daughter has the trust and the heart of the bird. She will be able to do things with the bird that you will only wish you could do. Dont take it as a bad thing but as a companion thing. Your bird feels the most comfy with your daughter and that is probablly going to be excepted by you and Jessie. Just watch out the bird will be very protective of your daughter and will strike you or lunge at you. This is her leader and she will protect her at all costs. Just watch the fingers she will give you a good sturn nip when needed. I think that it does not matter about your sex, age, size, or demener if a bird trusts you it will defend you.

What would you say is this normal?

Post by Ronda on Thu Mar 20, 2008 1:20 am

Ok SweetHeart is 10 months old. Most of you know my story from a previous forum. She is finally coming around to us. She does prefer me over anyone, which is just fine with me lol. But our daughter Jessica can go right up to her cage and ask her to step up and she does with no problem at all. Than she can take her over to the couch and sit with her and pet her like a dog lol. Jessie or I can't do this! I can do it a little more than Jessie can. But not to the extent that Jessica can. Is it because she's smaller? What do you guys think?
