Every bird is different and you have to consider your own situation whenever you hear advice about birds. I think the advice about having more than one bird together has more to do with having more than one in the same cage. For instance- if you get a baby parakeet and keep it on its own, it is more likely to want to interact with you and learn to speak to be able to communicate with you. If you got two baby parakeets together they would enjoy each others company more than yours and be less likely to want to stay tame, interact with you and learn to speak. If you got another grey and put it in with your grey now there is a chance that they would love each other more than you and wouldn't care so much about spending time with you- see my point? Now, some others will probably get on here and argue that they have two greys together and they are just fine and loving to the owner- that's why I say every situation is different. I think you have to find what works for you and do that. In your situation it will probably be just fine to have all the birds in the same room together. They may pick up each other's calls but they may also teach each other words- who knows? Just be sure to monitor them closely if you have them loose together- you don't want them to accidently nip off another's toes or something equally tragic.

Well Kimmie as you know I have both, and the Quaker being she is 12 has a great vocabulary. SweetHeart is only a year old and she is doing good with learning. She has picked up a whole lot on her own, but the Quaker has taught her a bunch as well. She mimics the quaker and says some of the exact phrases that the quaker says that I know we haven't sat there and said to SweetHeart. The Quaker, African Grey, and the Cockatoo are all in the same room, in the living room with all of us. They all do very well. Hope this helps!

I don't think that having other birds stops a grey talking. I have other birds along with my 2 greys, and it certainly hasnt stopped Liath mouthing off all day Smile The only thing I have noticed is that Liath does a mean imitation of the others, only LOUDER Exclamation It is more likely that your quaker will learn from your grey than vice versa!

I also have a bird (Beaker) in my computer room, because it is a room that is in use by me or the kids all day long. I work here, study here, chat here and the kids play here. So Beaker is in good company!

need some help

Post by kimmie_30 on Sat Jul 05, 2008 2:16 pm

ok i have heard before and also i believe i read somewhere that when you have a african grey you shouldnt have other birds around him. i have three other birds which one is new and still under quarantine which he has a full health check clear but i still want to be safe. but this new bird talks and says different things my african grey is 6 months old and is learning still jabbers alot and said hello and his name, well his name is not so good when he says it but he is learning. i just heard that if you have other birds around he wont talk or be friendly or want anything to do with you. just want to know if that is true. right now i have the grey in the living room, and the parrotlet and the sun conure in one bedroom and the quaker is in the computer room, and no for those who are thinging oh she just shuts them up in a room it is not all like that my birds are spoiled and get more attention than my dogs they are by a window which they singing to the birds outside and they are always out of there cage playing so they dont get ignored at all. the quaker on the other hand is in the computer which when quarantine is over i want to put the other two in the computer room with him so they can all chat lol but i was thinking since my quaker loves to run her or his mouth that him and the grey would love to chat and teach each other stuff.... just want to know if it is cool to do something like that i thought since he loves to talk that my grey will learn since the grey is only 6 months, which since i have had him he is crying like my puppy and my quaker is barking like the puppy. ok i will stop talking just someone help me. thank you!
